| On 5th January, 2012, Prof. Yogendra Singh, eminent sociologist and professor emeritus of JNU,delivered the 2nd Ujjal Kumar Ghosh memorial lecture on ,'Crisis in Societies in Transition' at the Indian Institute of Public Administration , ( IIPA) , Delhi. His Excellency, T.N. Chaturvedi, Padma Bushan, Ex-Governor of Rajasthan, MP and CAG, presided over the function. IIPA, Purnujjal Papiya Ghosh Memorial Trust and Centre for Studies in Civilisations,( CSC), Delhi, jointly organised the function. Attendees were from diverse backgrounds of academics, judiciary, the arts, civil society groups etc. rich
tributes were paid to Ujjal Kumar Ghosh for his remarkable
achievements in the sphere of public administration, as a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), of the Bihar cadre. By T N Chaturvedi ji. His brilliant and promising career was ruthlessly cut short in 1957 in what is widely believed to be a case of a politically motivated murder in a government hospital. He also mentioned the intriguing murder of Prof Papiya Ghosh, Ujjal Kumar Ghosh's daughter , on his death anniversary, in the same city in 2006, for reasons that have yet to be convincingly established. Dr . Tuktuk Ghosh Kumar, Ujjal Kumar Ghosh's youngest daughter and a serving senior IAS officer (West Bengal Cadre) observed that the recognition was long overdue to a rare personality who had paid for his values and principles of honesty, courage, dedication to duty and integrity with
his life, thereby becoming an inspiration for succeeding generations of public servants. It was very unfortunate that the Bihar Govt had not so far acknowledged his contributions and ultimate sacrifice of his life in the service of the state.
There was an interesting interactive session after the lecture which was greatly appreciated. Prof Singh assured that he would have the written text circulated for which there was a huge demand. Prof Bhuvan Chandel, Memeber-Secretary, CSC, summed up the deliberations and delivered the vote of thanks.
Prof Pronob Banerjee Co-ordinated the function on behalf of IIPA.
